Endorsement highlights a shared commitment to service and progress in Kentucky 

PARIS, KY. – Former Kentucky Governor Paul E. Patton has announced his endorsement of Amy McGrath, Democratic candidate for Kentucky U.S. Senate. 

Both dedicated to service, Governor Patton and McGrath share a commitment to building a better Kentucky. They believe in uplifting working families and rural communities by improving access to education, lowering costs for working families, expanding healthcare access, and growing professional opportunities. 

Paul Patton, who served as the 59th governor of Kentucky from 1995 to 2003, boasts a career spanning business, public service, and education leadership. After building a successful coal business, he transitioned into politics, serving as Pike County judge executive, lieutenant governor, and secretary of Economic Development before being elected governor in 1995, where he championed higher education reform and major statewide initiatives.

From underfunded schools and housing shortages in Eastern Kentucky to the rising housing, food, utilities, and health care costs, Amy McGrath brings the experience and discipline to the job this moment demands. She understands how government works, how to lead under pressure, and how to deliver for the people she serves. That’s why I’m proud to endorse her, ”said Governor Patton. 

Patton made significant investments in education and championed long-term improvements in workforce advancements. He introduced the Kentucky Postsecondary Education Improvement Act of 1997 and established the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS), expanding community college and postsecondary education options and increasing access to training for working-class and rural Kentuckians. 

Patton also established Lottery-Funded Financial Aid and created the Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES), making higher education more affordable for thousands of Kentuckians. His reforms laid the foundation for the state’s ongoing progress within education and workforce expansion.

By expanding access to higher education, building our community and technical college system, and investing in workforce training, he opened doors for generations of Kentuckians. Patton’s endorsement showcases a shared commitment to continued progress for Kentucky. Like Governor Paul Patton, McGrath is focused on advancing Kentucky through new ideas and practical leadership that delivers results. 

Kentucky’s U.S. Senate seat is open for the first time in nearly 40 years thanks to Mitch McConnell’s departure. The Democratic primary election will take place on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
