Endorsement highlights shared military service as McGrath runs for Kentucky’s first open Senate seat in decades
PARIS, Ky. — Veteran and New Jersey Governor-Elect Mikie Sherrill announced her endorsement of Kentucky Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Amy McGrath on Friday.
Sherrill and McGrath share notable records of service and leadership. Both are graduates of the United States Naval Academy and military veterans who have devoted their careers to serving the nation. Their experience in uniform informs their approach to public service, where they continue to demonstrate disciplined, principled leadership focused on addressing affordability challenges, expanding access to health care, and ensuring fair and effective representation for the communities they serve.
“I am proud to stand with Amy McGrath. Amy and I learned the importance of servant leadership at the Naval Academy, and that has guided her throughout her career, including her time as a pilot and as an instructor at Annapolis. Amy will be ready on day one to fight for us in the United States Senate,” said Sherrill.
“At a time when too many Washington politicians have abdicated their responsibilities to the American people, whether it’s fighting to lower the cost of healthcare, improve our education, or strengthen our national security, we need leaders like Amy McGrath. Amy will be fearless in the face of the challenges confronting the people of Kentucky and across the country,” she said.
With her victory, Sherrill becomes the first woman veteran to serve as governor in U.S. history. Sherrill was among the wave of Democrats who secured key victories for the 2025 elections, as districts around the country overperformed for Democrats. In 2023, Mikie was named the most effective New Jersey House lawmaker by the nonpartisan Center for Effective Lawmaking for her years of work delivering on the concerns of her constituents.
Drawing on experience as public servants and parents, Sherrill and McGrath also emphasize the need for affordability. Lowering costs for basic needs such as groceries, housing, utilities, and health care, while advocating for transparency in Washington policymaking, are among their top concerns.
“I am deeply honored to have the endorsement of my friend Governor-Elect Mikie Sherrill. Governor Sherrill’s lifetime of service to our country and her steady principled leadership set a standard I deeply respect. As a fellow naval aviator and veteran, we share a commitment to service above self, and I am grateful for her support as we continue the work of strengthening our democracy and delivering results for working families,” said McGrath.
With career senator Mitch McConnell stepping down, the Kentucky U.S. Senate seat is open for the first time in almost 40 years. McGrath is running for accessible health care, lowering costs for Kentuckians, and to be a voice for all communities across the commonwealth.
The primary election will take place on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. Voters can find more information for polling locations, hours, and registration status at the Kentucky Voter Information Center website.
